  • Prequalification invitation paves the way for the Omani private sector to play a central role in the countrys logistics development
  • Sohar-Abu Dhabi Line is the first step of the project connecting vibrant cities, major ports and industrial hubs
  • OERC’s state-of-the-art railway project is set to be a quantum leap in the industrial, tourism, transportation and logistics sectors

Oman and Etihad Rail Company (OERC) has invited local companies specialized in implementing infrastructure projects to submit prequalification bids to tender for the Oman-UAE railway network project by March 27, 2023.

This invitation paves the way for the Omani private sector to play a central role in the country’s logistic development and contribute to the Sultanate’s national economy. Interested companies can find prequalification documents available for purchase and download on the e-payment services portal.

Following the conclusion of the prequalification process, OERC plans to float tenders for the civil and construction works on the railway network, which will be divided into three packages. The first package includes the design and construction of the railway itself, the second includes the construction of amenities and stations, while the third includes the construction of various project facilities in preparation for the main tender.

The mega-project follows through on the vision to connect Oman and the UAE via a state-of-the-art railway network, strengthening the historically close relations between the two nations and optimizing the efficiency of cross-border land operations throughout the GCC. Additionally, the project unlocks limitless growth opportunities for private sector companies, showcasing OERC’s commitment to expanding the role of the private sector in the logistics industry by building strong domestic partnerships, fostering homegrown talents and creating jobs, thereby increasing in-country value and supporting the national economy.

OERC’s multiphase railway project promises a major boost to the industrial, tourism, transportation and logistics sectors. Phase one will be the construction and operation of the Sohar-Abu Dhabi Line, connecting vibrant cities and ports, as well as vital industrial hubs in Oman and the UAE. The line is set to transport passengers and goods across 303 km and slash the journey time, which will maximize efficiencies in transportation and logistics and increase market competitiveness by reducing supply chain costs and attracting investment.

In addition to the far-reaching economic impacts of the project, OERC’s landmark railway network will provide safe, reliable and sustainable means of transportation, strengthening the familial and communal bonds between the Omani and Emirati people and promoting comprehensive development in the two neighboring nations.

About OERC

Oman and Etihad Rail Company (OERC) was established in September 2022 as a joint venture equally owned by Etihad Rail and Oman Rail, the developers and operators of the national railway networks of the UAE and Oman, respectively. The Company was created to design, develop, and operate a state-of-the-art railway network that connects Sohar Port in Oman to the UAE’s national railroad network via a project valued at three billion US dollars.

OERC will lay out the project’s foundations and implementation action plan, including the timetable and financing mechanisms. Then, OERC will supervise the design, execution, and operation of the railway connecting Sohar and Abu Dhabi, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and regulations adopted by the two countries.
