Asyad Group has scooped the Gold Award at the Oman Sustainability Week pre-awards ceremony in recognition of its relentless efforts to achieve growth and business continuity while keeping sustainability high on its agenda. The Award that saw Asyad Group reaping the fruits of its labour and clear focus on selected United Nations Sustainability Development Goals that address climate change, translates its strategic synergies with its partners Salalah Port, SOHAR Port and Freezone, Port of Duqm, Asyad Shipping and Drydock aimed at reinforcing the logistics sector’s competitiveness, meeting sustainability goals and going green.
Commenting on the event, Mr. Essam Nasser Al Shibani, Vice President of QHSSE at Asyad Group said: “OSW serves as an excellent platform for Asyad, joining forces with its partners, and showcase its leading experience in meeting sustainability requirements, going green and relying on clean energy and set a new benchmark in Asyad Group’s sustainability journey”.
“The sustainability goals that Asyad Group clearly focuses on go hand in hand with the rapid progress that the logistics sector is witnessing and our crucial role in promoting connectivity, trade, and economic growth in the Sultanate. We have remained vigilant of our carbon footprints and have deployed several strategic initiatives in line with Oman’s sustainable development goals.”
SOHAR Port and Freezone has already developed sustainability frameworks in its operation by multiple programs such promoting green shipping, Environmental ship index incentives and energy optimization enhancement projects. The leading Port and Freezone in the region are also dedicated in energy conservation having allocated 13% of its freezone land for solar power generation that targets the reduction of 300,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
Meanwhile, Salalah Port has demonstrated its commitment to energy conservation by optimizing 40% of Energy in container terminal lighting, offsetting 50% carbon footprint of container terminal’s electrical power consumption and has joined hands with its partner, Maersk, to bring down CO₂ emissions to 20% by end of year 2022 and set the bar at net zero emissions by 2050.
Port of Duqm is positioning itself as the country’s leading hub for handling and exporting of green hydrogen. Foremost, amongst the green initiatives in Duqm is the Hyport Duqm Project, targeting large scale production of green hydrogen (from renewable energy) as ‘fuel of the future’, its derivatives, and export of these products via Port of Duqm. The project is fully aligned with the strategy adopted by PODC to work on green initiatives from inception, ensuring its place in the fast-evolving hydrogen-economy, as the world gradually moves away from fossil fuels.
Asyad Shipping is aligning its efforts to meet the IMO requirements to reduce CO2 by 40% in 2030 and 70% by 2050 and support Oman Vision 2040 and the resultant sustainability drive.
